CapeTalk Radio presenter, Refilwe Moloto speaks to Zahira Asmal, director at The City about memory and placemaking in South African cities. Listen to the podcast from CapeTalk.
“What purpose to statues serve in a democratic society? What message do they convey to urban citizens in public spaces in particular? Do we need to be so literal in the representation of our heroes? If we are to reference an individual from history, should we not instead create a place or develop a service that embodies the soul and character of that person and their contributions to society? In other words, we should seek to make place in society that represents the particular aspect of that person we wish to celebrate. In this way, we may be inspired by their contributions and seek to make similar contributions of our own.”
